Today, let’s discuss mastering your daily commuteโa journey that, when done right, can set the tone for a day filled with productivity and positivity. As caregivers, your dedication to providing exceptional care deserves a stress-free transition to work. Let’s uncover some secrets that will transform your commute into a source of energy and readiness for the day ahead.
Choosing the Right Route
Commutes can be challenging, but with a bit of planning, you can navigate them smoothly. Explore different routes to find the one that aligns with your preferences and avoids unnecessary stress. Consider less-traveled roads or public transportation options that might offer a more relaxed experience. By choosing the right route, you can transform your commute from a hassle to a peaceful part of your day.
Allowing Ample Time
Rushing in the morning can set a frantic tone for the day. As caregivers, you carry a significant load, and a hurried start won’t serve you well. Allow yourself ample time for the commute, factoring in potential delays or unexpected situations. Arriving with a few extra minutes to spare can make a world of difference, allowing you to transition into your workday with ease.
Transforming Stress into Calmness
A calm commute contributes to a positive mindset. Explore techniques to transform stress into calmness during your journey. Consider listening to soothing music, engaging in mindfulness exercises, or enjoying a podcast that uplifts your spirits. By infusing moments of tranquility into your commute, you create a buffer between home and work, ensuring you step into your caregiving role with a composed and focused mindset.
Remember, caregivers, your journey to work doesn’t have to be a source of stress. By choosing the right route, allowing ample time, and infusing moments of calmness, you can master your commute and lay the foundation for a day that honors both your caregiving responsibilities and your personal well-being. Some people age so well that they need little help until they are well into their eighties, while others need hands-on care as early as their fifties or sixties.
Adult children are often faced with the task of caring for both parents and this was the case for Christine Psalms.
She shares her story with us in this episode and how she became a caregiver for both her parents.

Who needs a morning routine? Everyone. It doesn’t matter how young or old you are. Having a list of instructions to begin your day can help anyone have a great day. Children especially thrive on routine, which makes it important to teach them these basics to a morning routine as soon as they’re old enough to start doing these things.
If you’re helping your child set up their own morning routine, you will want to remember these important aspects.
Re-affirm Connections
A child needs to feel secure in their place in their family. By starting the day with a cuddle or hug, they know they’re loved and accepted by those around them. If your kids are feeling too old for this kind of affection, find other ways to connect during their morning routine, such as having them help prepare breakfast or inviting them to exercise with you.
Have a Launch Zone
Generally, every house has someplace where items are set down when people come in. If you already have a drop zone where backpacks tend to be set down, why not make this a launch zone for the morning routine? The night before, use this space to set out things your child will need for the day, so they won’t forget it come morning.
Include Things Which Honor Health
Your child needs to learn how important it is to take care of themselves. This means doing more than just feeding them breakfast in the morning or encouraging exercise. Your child needs to also understand why some foods are better than others or how much exercise will help them feel their best as you add these things into their routines. This gives them ownership in their health and empowers them to make the right choices to feel their best.
Pay Attention to Self-Image
Growing up can leave children scrambling to figure out where they fit in among their peers. This can sometimes bring up feelings of insecurity or of not ‘measuring up.’ By encouraging children to include affirmations in their day, you teach them to notice the best things about themselves, which helps them build confidence.
Include Dreams
A morning routine shouldnโt be only about doing whatโs necessary. Teach your child to enjoy mornings by including things they already love to do. Or help them to set goals, using the morning routine to work toward these desires in small stages until they achieve the desired result.
Together, these different pieces will help you form the framework for a routine that will help your child thrive. Remember, though, as a child grows and changes, you will need to reassess whether or not their routine still serves the purpose it needs to. An adjustment might be necessary to keep their morning routine meaningful to them.

Does a morning routine have to be a lonely endeavor?
Absolutely not! You can still carry out your morning routine if you have a partner living with you (or even just visiting). Better yet, you can make them a part of each step of your morning, giving you added time together and building your relationship.
How? Try these simple ideas:
Start Slow
There’s nothing like the two-alarm method for starting your day. Use the first alarm to wake up enough to cuddle time with your partner. This is the perfect time for a slow start for both of you. When your second alarm goes off, you know it’s time to get out of bed.
Pair Up for a Workout
Exercise together makes your significant other your accountability partner, while you get to do the same for them. Look for activities you can do together like jogging or playing tennis for added fun together.
Shower Together
Well, you wanted to bathe anyway. Showering together might not conserve as much water as youโd think, but itโs certainly a fun way to get clean in the morning!
Make Breakfast Together
Cooking together can be fun and rewarding. Or take turns, with one person cooking while the other sets the table. Then sit down and eat together for an added time to talk and reconnect.
Dance
Looking for a relaxing way to get the blood pumping? Why not put on your song and dance around the living room? This is a fun way to supercharge your morning and put a spring in your step.
Exchange Compliments
Sometimes we get pretty good at beating ourselves down with negative self-talk. We need to really learn when someone else says something nice about us. Every morning, tell the other person something you love about them or something you’re grateful for. These are words they can take to heart, building up their self-image. Now turn it around and take the words they say to you in this space to heart. Make their truth your own.
Kiss
Before one or both of you head out the door, say goodbye properly. A special embrace or kiss will make sure you both start your day with a smile.
While not every piece of your morning routine will wind up including the other person, you’ll feel more deeply connected as you go into your day by making some intentional connection points in your morning. What a beautiful way to build your relationship!

Whatโs the best thing caregivers can do to put their morning on track? Set yourself up for success the night before.
Of course, better mornings are pretty easy once you have a morning routine in place, but your best mornings happen when youโre ready to hit the ground running. To do this, try doing these six simple things in advance.
Check Your Diet
Eating too soon before bed or having caffeine in the evening can make for restless sleep. By limiting what you eat in the hours before bed and switching out to decaf, you’ll feel better in the morning.
Lay Out Your Clothes
Nothing wastes time like hunting for accessories or discovering you don’t have clean socks first thing in the morning. By taking care of these things now, you’ll cut your prep time in the morning in half.
Check Your Schedule
Do you have early calls or appointments to keep? You might need to adjust your wake time to avoid rushing. A simple check will keep you on track regardless of what you have planned for the day.
Make a List
Speaking of planning, what are your goals for tomorrow? Write down a short list (no more than 3 or 4 things) of what you’d like to accomplish for the day. This will help you stay on task and help when it comes time to transition into work from your morning routine.
Choose a Bedtime
Itโs crucial for caregivers to get enough rest at night to ensure they are on track to provide care to our clients and loved ones. The average adult requires 7 โ 9 hours of sleep. Of course, you know your body. How much sleep do you honestly require to feel good? Coordinate bedtime with your wake time. Allow enough time to get through your morning routine to ensure your morning is never rushed.
Set Yourself Up for Great Sleep
Finally, you’re never going to start off on a good foot in the morning if your sleep was terrible the night before. Pay attention to the small details, like ensuring your room is at the right temperature. Also, make sure your pillow is supportive and you have a quiet and dark space for the best sleep.
The best part of all of this? None of these items takes more than a few minutes to set up. Why not make them part of an evening routine? Now youโre on track for a great day, every day!
